Corona-Virus diseases-19 pandemic preparedness and response assessment

Abstract


Introduction: Corona virus disease – 2019 virus is newly emerging serious global public health threat originated from China and has expanding rapidly throughout the world. Therefore, the aim of this assessment was to assess COVID-19 preparedness and response and to take action based on identified gap to slow transmission, reduce case numbers and end community transmission

Methods: Descriptive study was done from July 20 to 30, 2020 G.C in Abrjiha health center, West Dembia, Central Gondar zone. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using checklist, observational and interview guide. Finally, it was analyzed by text, table and graph.

Result: In Central Gondar Zone, there are 4 (27%) more risky woreda (including West Dembia) and one land crossing. There is COVID-19 pandemic preparedness and response plan incorporating non-communicable diseases, incident management organogram and committee. A total of 2671 (76.4%), 139 (69.8%) and 13 (30.3%) health workers were trained at zone, woreda and health center respectively. As of July 20, in West Dembia a total of 169 tests (9.3% of zone) were done, among these 5 cases (50% of zone) were confirmed, 179 contacts (24 close contacts, 155 casual contacts) were traced. Of these 34 were health worker and 1 hypertensive case.  All of the confirmed cases were recovered. There is shortage of human personnel in the woreda health office (one person for PHEM officer, malaria, TB/HIV). No quarantine, isolation and treatment center in the zone, woreda and health center. A total of 1,393,605.44 birr collected from the community and partners, of these 854,590.43 birr (61.3%) were used. Shortage of personal protective equipment’s and water in health center.

Conclusion: Corona-virus diseases-19 pandemic preparedness and response in the planning, surveillance unit was good and should be strengthen. However, the case management, infection prevention and control and risk communication unit needs support.
